A group of people organized to exert pressure on the existing government or a public official to fulfill their common interests is known as a pressure group.
The concept of pressure groups came from America (the U.S.).
Characteristic:
They are informal and sometimes formal.
They are temporary.
Pressure groups exist in all states and at all ages.
Types of Pressure Groups:
There are various forms of pressure Groups;
Political pressure group
Business pressure group
Trade pressure group
Special interest group
Cause group
Lobbies
Pressure group in Pakistan:
In a democratic country, pressure groups play their roles for the common as well as for personal interest just like in Pakistan. In Pakistan, pressure groups work as follows:
Pressure group as a political party
(MQM, BJP, ANP, TLP)
Pressure group in a political party
(Shahid Khakan Abasi and Rana-San-Ullah Khan’s groups in PMLN)
Jahangir Tareen, Aleem Khan, and Shah Mehmood Qureshi are groups in PTI.
Influence on government:
In Pakistan, there is a multi-party system and some of the major parties like PMLN, PPP, and PTI form a coalition government with the help of small political parties and party pressure groups.
Pressure group made a coalition government in 2018:
In the general election of 2018, PTI won the majority of seats in parliament as compared to other major parties (PMLN and PPP) and formed a coalition government by making alliances with minor parties and pressure groups (MQM).
Pressure group overthrew the government in 2022:
PDM (Pakistan democratic moment) passed a vote of no confidence motion against former PM Imran Khan that was supported by 10 parties and pressure group (MQM) in National Assembly of Pakistan in 2022.
Conclusion:
In Pakistan, political pressure groups sometime support government and sometime the opposition till the fulfillment of their interests. They act as a bridge between the government and the public and as a checker on different policies of their interests.
