A group of people organized to exert pressure on the existing government or a public official to fulfill their common interests is known as a pressure group.

The concept of pressure groups came from America (the U.S.).

They have some common interests; social, political, economic, and others.

HOW PRESSURE GROUPS CONTROL GOVERNMENT IN PAKISTAN

Characteristic:

  • They are informal and sometimes formal.

  • They are temporary.

Pressure groups exist in all states and at all ages.

Types of Pressure Groups:

There are various forms of pressure Groups;

Pressure group in Pakistan:

In a democratic country, pressure groups play their roles for the common as well as for personal interest just like in Pakistan. In Pakistan, pressure groups work as follows:

  • Pressure group as a political party

(MQM, BJP, ANP, TLP)

  • Pressure group in a political party

(Shahid Khakan Abasi and Rana-San-Ullah Khan’s groups in PMLN)

Jahangir Tareen, Aleem Khan, and Shah Mehmood Qureshi are groups in PTI.

 Influence on government:

In Pakistan, there is a multi-party system and some of the major parties like PMLN, PPP, and PTI form a coalition government with the help of small political parties and party pressure groups.

Pressure group made a coalition government in 2018:

In the general election of 2018, PTI won the majority of seats in parliament as compared to other major parties (PMLN and PPP) and formed a coalition government by making alliances with minor parties and pressure groups (MQM).

Pressure group overthrew the government in 2022:

PDM (Pakistan democratic moment) passed a vote of no confidence motion against former PM Imran Khan that was supported by 10 parties and pressure group (MQM) in National Assembly of Pakistan in 2022.

Conclusion:

In Pakistan, political pressure groups sometime support government and sometime the opposition till the fulfillment of their interests. They act as a bridge between the government and the public and as a checker on different policies of their interests.
