United Kingdom of Great Britain consists of four states including England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In UK there is a monarchy along with the parliamentary system. The system of the government of the UK is evolutionary. It transformed from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy.
At present the monarch of UK is Charles-III who became king after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth-II on 8 September 2022.whlie the current Prime minister of UK is Rishi Sunak.
Prime Minister:
In the UK, the Prime Minister is the head of the government and the head of the Executive and also the leader of his party. He is also a legal advisor of the monarch (King/Queen). He is assigned by the council of the members(ministers) called cabinet. There is no fixed tenure for the Prime Minister.
He is appointed by the Monarch (King/Queen) on the basis of his achievement, ability and political career. He was first elected to parliament by a majority of votes, then his nomination was approved by the Monarch.
Powers of PM:
The Prime Minister enjoys both legislative and Executive powers. He acts as an appointee of Minister for his/her Cabinet. He also chairs the Cabinet and makes important decisions.
Prime Minister is also responsible for the national security and also the chairman of National Security Council and made some important decision in form of emergency for instance, Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic 2020-21.
The Prime Minister also enjoys legislative powers as he is the head of the House of Common, he has the power to change the law. He also nominates some MPs in front of the Monarch for important posts. In the same way he has the power to remove the Minister by advising the Monarch.
Monarch (King/Queen):
British Monarchy can be traced backed as the absolute Monarchy. It referred according to the constitution. King/Queen is the head of the state and the crown dependencies (three island territories that is the governing possession of the empire). Monarchy in the UK is heredity base as after the death of the Queen Elizabeth-II her son became the King.
Powers of the Monarch:
The Monarch performed diplomatic and representative duties. The power of the King/Queen putted a limited by the constitution. He appoints the Prime Minister and also signs the appointment of ministers according to the advice of the Prime Minister.
He is the head of the Armed forces. The monarch is the only person who has the power to declare war and peace. He also made secrete advise for law making and the process of legislation was also passed by the will of the Monarch. He has the power to impose restrictions. even he has to sing his own death warrants.
Conclusion:
Both the Prime Minister and the Monarch have their own powers and authorities. The Prime Minister controls all the executive matters and performs legislation while the Monarch is the sovereign because all the decision making requires the signing of the Monarch for its implementation. In short, we can say that the King/Queen is the signing machine. As he has the status of ceremonial head.
