Lt-Gen Asim Munir, who was nominated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and whose nomination was approved by President Arif Alvi on Thursday evening (24 November 2022) will take the charge of the 600.000 strong nuclear charge armed army on November 29, 2022, after the retirement of Incumbent General Qamar Javid Bajwa.
He will serve as the 11th Chief of Army Staff (COAS). He will be the first COAS who have Sword of Honor.
Initial Training:
Asim Munir started his training from Mangla as 17th of the Officer Training School (OTS). His military career was initiated in 1986. After Zia-Ul-Haq, Lt-Gen Asif Munir will become the second COAS who graduated from OTS Mangla.
Current services:
In Pakistan Army he serves as the QUATERMASTER General at the GHQ (General Head Quarter) Rawalpindi. He has impeccable reputation in the Pakistan Military.
First COAS who directed the two Intelligence agencies:
In the history of Pakistan, Lt-Gen Asim Munir will be the first COAS who had already served in two intelligence Agencies. He served as the head of Military Intelligence (The unit to look after the army’s internal affairs) in 2017.
In 2018 he was promoted as the three-star general (Lieutenant General). Then he was given the charge of Director General (DG) in the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan.
Later he was replaced by Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed as the GD-ISI. His eight-month duration as DG-ISI is one of the shortest durations in the army’s history.
Hafiz-e-Quran:
At the age of 38, he became Hafiz-e-Quran, when he was posted to Madina as the Lt-Colonel. His father(late)was also hafiz-e-quran and was a principal at FG Technical High School. He belongs to a Syed family.

He was awarded the Civil award HILAL-E-IMTIAZ for crescent of excellence in 2018

Asim Munir is a right choice for Pakistan Army or not?
Some Analyst said that Lt-Gen Asim Munir has “Clear Line of thinking”. He is considered apolitical in his Approach.
According to Analysts the MI (Military intelligence) experience will help him to deal with the military’s internal dynamics. While ISI experience helps him to understand and deal with the global outlook for the future.
Muhammad Zeeshaan (Retired Army Official), who was the junior of Asim Munir in military said:
“In My Opinion his Biggest Challenge would be to Restore the TRUST and CONFIDENCE of the Nation Regarding Army”.
